Almost everyone arrives in Cairo with the same picture in their head: three pyramids on a ridge and the Sphinx in front of them. What nobody tells you before you book is that there are three quite different days sold under the same heading, they cost very different amounts, and they are not interchangeable.
The first is the plateau on its own. Four to five hours, the three pyramids, the panorama point out on the sand and the Great Sphinx below the ridge with Khafre’s Valley Temple beside it. This is the part that is in every one of the eighteen tours on this page, and for most people it is the whole reason for the trip.
The second is the full day south. The same plateau in the morning, then the road out to Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur, where the step pyramid and the bent pyramid show the shapes Egypt tried before Giza. These listings run eight hours and they are the ones that turn a famous view into a sequence you can follow.
The third is the plateau with a museum. Since the Grand Egyptian Museum opened ten minutes from the ridge, that pairing has become the day most people pick: the largest collection of artifacts in the country in the morning or afternoon, the pyramids in the other half, and lunch between them. It takes about seven hours.
